What is Laylatul Qadr?
Laylatul Qadr, also known as the Night of Power is observed by Muslims annually during the month of Ramadan. Muslims seek this most holy opportunity of worship during the odd days of the last ten days of Ramadan, believing that the knowledge of when it truly occurs is with Allah.
Muslims around the world engage in extra worship and good deeds these odds nights in hopes of maximizing rewards for their deeds, as "The night of power is better than a thousand months [or 83 years]" (Surah Al-Qadr, verse 3).
What can you do on this night?
Any of the odd numbered nights from the last 10 nights of Ramadan can be the Night of Power, Laylatul Qadr. For this reason, it is recommended to spend all of these nights in worship or good deeds. Here's a list of things one can do.
- Recite as much Quran as you can. If it falls under Laylatul Qadr, it is like reciting every day for 83 years.
- Donate at least $1 per day. If it falls under Laylatul Qadr, it is like donating $1 every day for 83 years.
- Support an orphan for as little as $1 per day. If it falls under Laylatul Qadr, it is like protecting a child every day for 83 years.
- Take a vacation for the sake of Allah. Engage in volunteer work, voluntary prayers, making dhikr, reading Quran, and spending time with family.
- Take part in itikaf. Those who partake in itikaf, stay in the masjid rotating various forms of remembering Allah.
- Recite: "Allahumma innaka `afuwwun tuhibbul `afwa fa`fu `annee" (Oh Allah, You are pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me)
- Make a personal dua list and believe with conviction that Allah will fulfill your duas in the best way possible. In addition, try doing so in the last third of the night (tahajjud) making long, sincere, and deep duas.
